The WHY To Exercise.

When we think about exercise, we often picture lifting weights, running marathons, or sweating it out in a spin class. But guess what? Exercise is way more than just those activities! Staying active is packed with benefits that everyone can enjoy. Research shows that moving your body regularly can:

  • Help you build super-strong muscles, tendons, and ligaments.

  • Support your bone health like a champ!

  • Keep your heart and lungs happy and healthy.

  • Help you manage your weight without the stress.

  • Boost your mental well-being and lift your spirits.

  • Give you a burst of energy and help you catch those Zzz’s at night.

Knowing all these awesome benefits is great, but it’s even easier to stay motivated when you connect exercise to something that truly matters to you!

Let’s chat about how exercise builds strong muscles, tendons, and ligaments. This isn’t just about lifting heavy things! It could mean carrying your groceries in one trip, getting up and down from the floor with ease, lifting your grandkids for a big hug, or climbing a flight of stairs to snag that perfect seat at the theatre. Strong muscles help you stay independent and enjoy every little moment in life!

Now, let’s talk about bone health. It’s super important because it helps reduce the risk of osteoporosis, which is when your bones become less dense. In 2022, about 17% of Australians over 75 were estimated to have osteoporosis or osteopenia. But here’s the bright side: strong bones can help prevent fractures if you happen to take a tumble. As we age and our balance changes, this becomes even more crucial. The good news? Exercise can also improve your balance! Just ask your exercise physiologist for some fun balance exercises you can do at home, like while waiting for the kettle to boil or even while brushing your teeth!

It’s easier to stay motivated when you connect exercise to something that truly matters to you!

And let’s not forget about heart and lung health! Exercise lowers the risk of serious illnesses like heart attacks and strokes, but it does so much more. Keeping your heart and lungs in tip-top shape means you’ll have the energy to walk your dog every day, dash from a far parking spot to the shops without breaking a sweat, or keep up with your kids or grandkids at the park. How fun is that?

Instead of only thinking about the medical reasons to exercise, why not make a list of the activities and experiences that bring you joy? Then, think about how staying active can help you keep doing these things for as long and as easily as possible. Let’s make movement a fun part of your life!
